Abandoned South Dakota Puppy Becomes Internet Sensation With His Bunny Ears

Abandoned South Dakota Puppy Becomes Internet Sensation With His Bunny Ears

The number of dogs abandoned each year is staggering. Many are left behind by owners who can no longer care for them, often in remote areas where survival becomes a daily struggle.

These acts of abandonment reflect a heartbreaking lack of empathy for animals who offer nothing but loyalty and love.

This story follows a puppy named Priority, who overcame abandonment and captured hearts across the Internet.

Left Behind But Not Forgotten

A routine day turned extraordinary for a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier in South Dakota. While driving her route, she spotted a small black-and-white puppy lying on a gravel road, clearly suffering from the heat.

She rushed from her vehicle to scoop him up. The puppy, just a few weeks old, was visibly malnourished. She placed him in a priority box and continued her deliveries with the pup by her side. He quickly proved to be a delightful companion.

After finishing her route, she brought him to a veterinarian. Though he had no physical injuries, he was dangerously dehydrated. Her intervention came just in time.

Once stabilized, a local shelter contacted Ruff Start Rescue in Princeton to see if they could take him in. They agreed, and soon the puppy arrived at the rescue center.

Moved by his journey, the staff named him Priority.

Winning Hearts With Every Ear Tilt

Ruff Start Rescue shared Priority’s story on their Facebook page, and it didn’t take long for him to catch the attention of a young girl named Frida. She was instantly smitten and persuaded her mother, Taya, to foster him.

“Frida saw the picture and really fell in love with Priority… She lobbied hard. She wrote me a couple of letters. She stayed after it. She said she was definitely gonna help out.”

Under their care in Eagan, Priority began to thrive. He gained weight, grew stronger, and was soon ready to find a permanent home.

With his oversized ears and charming head tilt, it was no surprise that Priority was adopted shortly after the rescue posted his adoption notice.

A New Beginning With A Loving Family

When Taya and Frida introduced Priority to his new family, he didn’t hesitate. He ran straight into his new mom’s arms and showered her with kisses.

That moment marked the beginning of his new life in the Twin Cities. His adoptive family was excited to show him the five-acre trails surrounding their home.

Priority, now renamed Peppe, had settled in beautifully. He had just completed his Beginner Obedience class, and his family was thrilled with his progress. They looked forward to continuing his training and possibly exploring agility courses.

Pepper also bonded with Lady, the family’s other dog.

“He and Lady are good buds, and love running around together outside and seeing what kind of critters they can chase/catch. He really is sweet, and provides some great entertainment every day,” Pepper’s family said.

Priority’s journey is a testament to how one compassionate act can change a life. Had the mail carrier not stopped that day, his story might have ended very differently.

When people choose to abandon their pets, the least they can do is ensure they’re left in safe hands. Shelters exist to help, but it takes a community to truly protect vulnerable animals.

We must remain vigilant and compassionate for those who cannot speak for themselves.
