Adopting a dog is about more than giving them a home, it’s about making sure the bond is right. That connection is vital because nothing matters more than being able to truly get along with your furry companion.
Sadly, some people adopt only to surrender their pets back to a shelter. It’s rarely the dog’s fault, but it happens far too often.
This is the story of Bentley, a timid shelter pup left behind by his original owners before he even had a chance.
Bentley’s Shy Beginning

When Bentley was just a puppy, he and his five siblings were left outside a Florida shelter, crammed inside a small kennel.
The staff immediately noticed them and brought them in, but all six desperately needed homes.
Most were adopted fairly quickly, but Bentley remained behind. No one knew how long it would take before he found a family.

That’s when the Gerard family stepped in. They were thrilled to meet Bentley, though he was timid and reserved at first.
He approached his new mom first and gradually warmed up to his dad. While he didn’t show his excitement openly, Bentley was relieved to finally be safe.
Gerard told GeoBeats Animals: “Mom adopted him, he’s got a special place in his heart for her.”
Bentley Becomes A Gentle And Caring Companion

Settling into his Florida home, Bentley soon met Piper, his new canine companion. They got along well, though Bentley sometimes felt jealous when Piper received extra attention.
But Piper was blind, deaf, and suffering from dementia. Over time, Bentley understood and became more patient, showing extra care not only toward Piper but also toward his new parents, especially his mom.
His attachment was so deep that whenever something happened to her, Bentley became visibly upset.
Once, when she fell ill, Bentley grew so distressed that he vomited and refused to leave her side.

Gerard said: “His love for her is like something I’ve never seen before. He knew she was sick and it made him sick.”
The family also admires his intelligence. Bentley picked up 25 to 30 commands and even taught himself to open doors.
Yet when it came to other dogs, he stayed withdrawn, keeping to himself except for Piper.
The Gerards are grateful for him, and Bentley is just as fortunate. He has finally found a family that loves and cherishes him completely.
