Maryland Dog Gives Birth Days After Being Abandoned, Then Watches Her Puppies Leave Without Her

Dogs abandoned at shelters or spending much of their lives confined to kennels are sadly all too common.

Senior dogs in particular face bleak prospects, as many owners lose interest in them, while potential adopters often pass by their kennels without a glance.

For older mother dogs, the heartbreak deepens when they see their puppies go to forever homes while they themselves remain behind. This happens far too often, as demand for puppies always outweighs interest in adult dogs.

Such was the fate of a German Shepherd named Star, only months after being abandoned by her family and left in a Maryland shelter.

Abandoned Just Days Before Giving Birth

Star had once lived a comfortable life in a warm home with a family she cherished and a canine companion she loved. Everything changed when she became pregnant.

According to Star’s webpage, both she and her male friend were surrendered because their owners claimed they no longer had time for them. From that day on, Star and her companion had to adjust to life in a Maryland shelter.

Just two days after she was left by her owners, Star went into labor and soon gave birth to five healthy puppies. Despite the shock because her favorite people weren’t there anymore, as well as the unknown environment, Star showed that she was a great mom while raising her babies.

Soon, she and her little ones were transferred to a better place, an All Shepherd Rescue (ASR) in Baltimore, Maryland, where experienced German Shepherd caretakers continued supporting her and her litter.

Her Puppies Found Homes, But She Was Left Behind

Before the puppies were even listed as available, adoption requests poured in. By the time they reached two months old, every one of Star’s pups had found a new home. Their mother, however, was left behind.

On top of the pain of watching her children leave one by one, Star also faced ongoing health challenges.

“Unfortunately, Star’s previous owner neglected important aspects of her health, failing to spay and provide monthly heartworm preventatives,” it is stated in her bio on the ASR website.

The rescue team took full responsibility for her treatment and recovery, though they acknowledged it would not be a quick or simple process.

Even through these hardships, Star never lost her bright spirit. She continued to love people wholeheartedly, despite the betrayal she had endured not long before.

A Loyal Heart Still Waiting For Love

The Baltimore rescue group is now working tirelessly to help Star find the home she deserves. In her adoption profile, they describe her qualities with the hope that someone will recognize her worth.

“Adopting Star means embracing a loyal companion, an incredibly sweet, friendly, and gorgeous German Shepherd,” it is stated in Star’s bio. “Without hesitation, she greets everyone who comes to visit!”

Star does well with other dogs but could also thrive as the only pet. She adores people and would flourish with active adults, as German Shepherds naturally love exercise and adventure.

She is crate-trained, affectionate, obedient, eager to please, intelligent, gentle, and playful.

“By opening your heart and home to this fantastic dog, you’ll not only provide Star with the love and care she deserves but also become a part of her incredible journey towards a brighter future,” it is stated in the end.
