In the countless stories of dogs left behind, only a small number ever get another chance at happiness.
Often, dogs are abandoned because of neglect, lack of time, or sudden changes in their owners’ lives.
Sometimes, however, a dog is given up not from cruelty, but from confusion about how to care for them. That was the case for Qwerty.
Although he was clearly loved, Qwerty was born with short spine syndrome and his family felt they had no choice but to leave him outside a shelter with a note.
Roadogs Steps In To Help Qwerty
When shelter staff found him waiting outside, they were stunned by what they saw. A small dog sat quietly with a handwritten note beside him, scrawled in a child’s writing: “I love my dog. Please don’t hit him. It’s a boy.”
The workers quickly reached out to Nikki of Roadogs Rescue in California, known for helping dogs with unusual conditions find permanent homes. As soon as she heard his story, she agreed to take him.
Usually, foster volunteers step in to care for new arrivals, but Nikki decided to keep Qwerty with her personally. She wanted to understand his condition and give him the attention he needed.
From the moment he arrived, Qwerty showed a cheerful personality. Despite his unusual appearance, he displayed no weakness or health problems. He was simply different in form, not in spirit.
In his foster home, Qwerty adjusted with ease, joining the other dogs and showing his playful, affectionate nature.
He loved walks, racing down the beach, and chasing balls with his siblings. Though he couldn’t climb furniture or run endlessly, he was content with his world. Nikki was certain he would bring joy to a future family.
It didn’t take long for that family to appear.
A Florida Family Opens Their Hearts
Just weeks later, Julie and Scott from Florida discovered Qwerty online and instantly fell in love. They had once shared life with Cuda, another dog with short spine syndrome, and the resemblance between the two was undeniable.
“There’s no denying Qwerty Cosmo and Cuda’s similarities,” the couple shared on Instagram.
Cuda had passed away years earlier, and Julie and Scott felt grateful for the chance to welcome another dog with the same rare condition into their lives.
When Qwerty arrived, he settled into his new home without hesitation. With the support of his new parents and canine siblings, he quickly grew comfortable, acting as though he had always belonged.
“He will never be let go of again… He is ours now and forever. And to his former people: He is safe. Thank you for leaving him where you did instead of some remote area. Still, I wish you could have gotten help. Your dog was very, very lucky to be rescued. Not many are,” his new owners wrote.
Now, Qwerty enjoys every moment of his new life. He plays with his siblings, charms both cats and dogs, greets strangers with kindness, and wins over everyone he meets.
His family documents his adventures regularly on their Instagram account, sharing the joy of a dog who once faced abandonment but is now thriving. Once left with only a note and an uncertain future, Qwerty has become the happiest short-spined pup in the world.
