Nala, a tiny kitten, was discovered alone in a dark alley with no one to protect her. Her luck shifted when a kind stranger brought her to the Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service in Spokane, Washington.
This once-forgotten kitten is about to be surrounded by so much love, she won’t know what to do with it.
A Frightened Kitten Gets A Second Chance
This fragile baby was still so young that her survival depended on finding the right foster home.
Jamie Myers, who had already been fostering a mama cat with kittens, immediately offered to care for her. Jamie knew that her foster cat had sadly lost some of her babies and might be open to helping. She was certain that little Nala would be welcomed with love.
She was about a week and a half younger than my group, so I said, ‘My mama is pretty wonderful. She’s been very accepting so let’s see if she can’t nurse. Nala nursed straight away and Mama took her in instantly. She started licking her, grooming her, and showing her acceptance and love, said Jamie.
Soon, the foster cat and her litter were adopted together, leaving Nala behind once again.
Since she was still so small, she remained in foster care until she was stronger. While the others grew quickly, she always seemed a little behind, but she was determined to catch up.
She did everything later than the rest of the group. When they all opened their eyes, she still had her eyes closed, and when they started toddling about, she was still latched onto Mama, nursing.
Jamie then welcomed Izzy, a fluffy dog mom, along with her litter of playful pups. Izzy’s maternal instincts were boundless, she quickly took in Nala as one of her own.
Fitting Into An Unusual Pack
The mama dog kept trying to get Nala and pick her up and put her in with the rest of her babies. She just thought one of the babies was out and missing — she kept trying to put it back, and put it back.
Seeing this touching reaction, Jamie realized it might be best to let Izzy take on Nala as part of the family.
She carefully supervised the interactions between Nala and all of the pups, helping in any way she could.
Izzy loved her new baby as much as she loved her pups. And, Nala sure loved this new environment she was in. When cuddling up with her new siblings, she sure couldn’t keep a smile off her face.
Nala quickly adapted to her new life with a dog mom and puppy siblings. Her natural curiosity led her to explore, slipping out of the pen to sneak bites of cat food and play on her own.
Yet when nap time rolled around, she always returned to curl up beside Izzy and the pups.
With so much love surrounding her, Nala grew stronger each day. When adoption time came, Izzy felt the loss deeply.
But Jamie had a plan to heal her. She brought home two more kittens in need of a mom.
Izzy immediately embraced the two sister kittens, showering them with affection as if they had been hers all along. The house was lively again, filled with cuddles and playful paws.
