Marla, a courageous stray mom found near a dock, carried that same dream in her heart. Here’s how her beautiful story began.
Hello, Marla
When Kristin Erwin heard about a stray dog wandering close to her workplace in Channelview, Texas, she didn’t hesitate. She immediately drove to the area.
As soon as she arrived, she noticed a sweet dog walking alone along the dock. The sight made her heart sink.
The moment the pup spotted her, she came running, rubbing against Erwin’s legs with joy. Her tail wagged nonstop, and her happy eyes lit up as Erwin gently stroked her head.
It was clear — this dog longed for love and attention.
After offering her food and water, Erwin realized something important: the dog was lactating. That meant her puppies had to be nearby.
In that instant, she knew she couldn’t just walk away.
Discovering Her Secret
With help from a local, Erwin soon learned where the puppies were hiding.
“They were stashed at an old rundown, closed restaurant, right on the porch area. They were only 3-4 weeks old. It was December and temps were dropping soon and I couldn’t leave her,” Erwin shared.
The property owner explained that the dog had been abandoned weeks earlier, when she was still pregnant.
Now, this devoted mom had been caring for eight tiny puppies all on her own.
“She had to have been drained and exhausted keeping them alive. I really feel for stray momma dogs, so it was especially hard for me,” Erwin admitted.
Erwin gathered the puppies into a crate and carried them to her car. Their little tails wagged happily as if they knew their lives were about to change.
The mother, whom she named Marla, was so worn out that she fell asleep on the ride to Erwin’s home.
A New Chapter Begins
Marla and her eight playful puppies quickly filled Erwin’s home with joy. For a month, she fostered them with love and care, ensuring they had everything they needed.
When the puppies grew old enough, they received their first vaccinations and were soon ready to look for forever families.
With the help of Paddy’s Paws and Misfit Mutts Dog Rescue, Marla and her little ones were transported to Wisconsin, where loving homes awaited them.
Although Erwin missed having the furry family around, her heart was full of happiness knowing their futures were secure.
Now, the puppies will grow up cherished and safe, never having to endure the harsh life of strays again.
As for Marla, the once-tired dockside mom finally got the chance to rest and enjoy the warmth of a real home.
Her dream — and the dream of every stray mother dog — had finally come true.
