California Couple Races Against Time To Save Dog Facing Euthanasia After Personal Loss

Losing a dog leaves a hole that can never truly be filled. The most one can do is hold on to treasured memories and photos that remind them of the love they once shared.

Jessica Sattelberger and her partner, Adam, went through this heartbreak when their beloved rescue, Myrtle, lost his fight with terminal cancer. Saying goodbye was devastating, but before that day came, they made a promise together.

In Myrtle’s honor, they vowed to save another pup in need. That pup turned out to be none other than Shmoo.

Keeping Their Word

Jessica, who volunteers at a shelter in Los Angeles, California, has always been passionate about helping dogs. When she and Adam learned about a four-year-old dog surrendered to a shelter in Queens and placed on the list for euthanasia, they acted immediately.

The dog’s name was Shmoo, and the couple wasted no time in applying to bring her home.

“When Myrtle passed away, we promised her that we would help another dog and when we saw that this girl was about to be at risk of euthanasia, we knew we had to help,” Jessica said in an Instagram video.

Shmoo, described as timid and anxious, finally had a home. Still, the transition was far from easy. For months, she struggled to adjust and rarely let her new family in.

Shmoo, with her fluffy face and worried expression, accepted pets but wouldn’t climb onto the couch or fully trust her new owners. It was clear she needed patience and time, something Jessica and Adam were more than willing to give.

“She’ll have a yard and a house and two people that already love her so much and I think Myrtle would approve,” Jessica added.

The couple focused on making Shmoo’s world safe and comfortable. Then, little by little, everything began to change.

A Fresh Start For Shmoo

Although her anxiety was still present, Shmoo slowly began to open up. Instead of retreating to a corner, she started to follow Jessica and Adam everywhere. She wanted to be near them at all times, showing the affection she once kept hidden.

Now, Shmoo happily snuggles on the couch, holding hands with her humans and soaking in every ounce of love. After enduring so much heartbreak, she finally found her place of peace, and her rescuers couldn’t be happier.

With time, Shmoo’s confidence grew. She began exploring her yard, enjoying walks, and drawing attention with her distinctive, cloud-like look. Neighbors and strangers alike admired her unique charm.

For the first time, she was living the life every dog deserves.

Shmoo does face one challenge—hip dysplasia. The condition makes long walks more difficult, but thanks to medication and the attentive care of Jessica and Adam, she still enjoys an active, happy life.

Despite her medical needs, Shmoo radiates joy. She now has a home where she is safe, cherished, and loved endlessly. Most importantly, she will never be abandoned again.

From this moment forward, Shmoo’s story will be one of love and devotion—just like her late brother, Myrtle.
