When his owner passed away, this devastated pup spent weeks waiting outside his empty home in New Orleans, Louisiana. He didn’t realize that the door he longed for would never open again.

Heartbroken And Scared
Amanda Knight was walking her dog, Thor, when she noticed Houdini sitting all alone on the front steps of a vacant house. At first, she assumed he was waiting for someone to return, but then neighbors told her the truth.
Houdini had lost his beloved owner, and the family refused to take him in. Instead, they left him to fend for himself on the streets.

“We would sit with him for a week letting him know he would have food and scratches and love. However, he would run away when I tried to leash him. The whole neighborhood tried with no luck,” Amanda wrote.
Grieving, terrified, and uncertain, Houdini only appeared long enough to eat the food neighbors left before quickly running away again.

Amanda offered him another treat. This time, instead of fleeing, he stayed. After some gentle scratches on the back, she carefully slipped a leash over his neck—and, at last, Houdini didn’t resist.

Knowing the local shelter’s euthanasia policy, she wanted to find Houdini a temporary home where he could heal until ready for a forever family. Against all odds, a kind woman named Danni Frank stepped forward and offered to foster him.
