Monty and his brother, Phoenix, were surrendered to animal control when they were only four-and-a-half weeks old.
Kathleen C. Cailloux Humane Society of Kerrville (KCHS), a shelter in Texas, welcomed the tiny pups.
The staff showered them with care, believing that the brothers would soon be adopted into homes of their own.
Although both were timid and unsure, Monty and Phoenix slowly adjusted to life behind the shelter walls.
They spent their early days playing on the grass, always dreaming of the freedom and affection of a family.
Monty Faces Heartbreak
Monty was the first to leave. He found a home while Phoenix remained at the shelter.
The sweet pup was thrilled to begin life with his family, convinced this was his happy ending.
For four years, Monty enjoyed what he had always wanted: freedom and the comfort of family life.
Then his world collapsed when his family returned him to the shelter.
This time he was no longer the lively young pup his old shelter friends remembered. And Phoenix was not there to greet him, since his brother had already been adopted.
The staff at Kerrville noticed Monty was more timid now, but they kept believing that love would find him again.
Sadly, it never happened.
Almost seven years have passed since Monty was brought back, and he is still waiting for someone to give him a second chance.
Everyone who meets him falls in love, cheering for the day he finally leaves to start a new life with his forever family.
Hoping To Find His Forever Humans
Monty’s personality has stayed the same, but time has changed his appearance. His black coat is now speckled with gray, a visible reminder of how long he has been waiting.
Since his return, Monty has shown anxiety around other animals, and he has not made doggy friends.
Still, he does not let this keep him from enjoying life.
Monty lights up when he is around his favorite people, showing the same affectionate and playful side he has always had.
“Monty may be old [in] years, but he is still a puppy at heart. He loves to be dressed up in sweaters and tutus, and he also loves his [pajamas],” Mackenzie, KCHC’s director, told The Dodo.
Even though Monty struggles with other pets and children, his shelter family believes he will be the perfect companion for someone special.
“Although he doesn’t get along with other animals or children, he is the sweetest soul you would ever meet. He does still love to go on his daily walks, but he hangs out for [the] majority of his day and has major puppy-dog eyes for anybody who looks at him,” Mackenzie added.
Monty continues to dream of the day when he finds his match and finally receives the love he has been waiting for all these years.
