South Dakota Stray Dogs Rescued From Dumpsite Reunite After A Year Apart

Although every pup deserves a family to cherish them, many homeless dogs are denied the chance to know warmth and care.

They long for parents who will protect them from the dangers of the streets.

Cooper, Trixi, and Bruno were three such strays, struggling to survive at a dumpsite on a reservation. The three became inseparable, spending their days searching for scraps of food and curling up together to stay warm.

Deep down, they held onto hope that someone kind would notice them and lead them to safety.

The Heroes Who Came To Help

That hope came true when LightShine Canine: A Rez Dog Rescue, located in South Dakota rushed to their aid after hearing about the trio in need.

The rescuers’ hearts broke when they found the three pups curled up on a filthy mattress at the reservation, clinging to each other for comfort.

Although the team tried to bring them to safety, the dogs were terrified and hesitant to trust humans.

With patience and persistence, the rescuers managed to capture Trixi and Bruno, but Cooper kept his distance.

The Healing They Desperately Needed

Once Trixi and Bruno were safe, rescuers noticed painful injuries on their paws. They suspected the pups had been caught in traps, which explained their fear of people.

Cooper remained wary and avoided capture, but the team refused to give up. They continued checking on him until he was finally ready.

“[Rescuers] knew he was still out there so they continued to check for him often. [By] the end of February, he was ready for rescue and jumped in the van,” said Kelli Hanson, marketing and communications manager at Ruff Start Rescue.

At the vet, it was confirmed that Cooper had the same injuries as his two friends. Sadly, each of the dogs needed a leg amputated. After their surgeries, the pups slowly recovered with the help of devoted staff who showered them with love and comfort.

Their journeys soon diverged. Cooper was taken in by Ruff Start Rescue, located in Princeton, Minnesota, while Bruno and Trixi went to The Rescue Crew, and Healing Hearts Rescue MN, respectively.

Despite the hardships, the three proved resilient. After healing, they each found their way to foster homes filled with kindness.

A Reunion Filled With Joy

A year later, Ruff Start Rescue shared an update about Cooper. on their Facebook page. His foster family had fallen deeply in love with him and knew they could never let him go. He officially became a cherished member of their household.

“He is a perfect dog. Many will say how lucky he is to be with us, however, we feel we are truly the lucky ones,” said Brenda Heitschmidt, Cooper’s mom.

When people asked about Trixi and Bruno, Cooper’s family reached out and connected with their adoptive parents. Knowing how strong the dogs’ bond had been, the families decided to arrange a reunion in Minnesota.

The three best friends were overjoyed when they saw each other again, playing and snuggling just as they once had.

Their families even recreated a touching photo to honor the moment, capturing their happiness a year after their rescue from the dumpsite.

I’m so glad that Cooper, Bruno, and Trixi now have families who treasure them. Hopefully, this will be just the first of many reunions they share together.
