Life on the streets is tough.
For countless stray pups, it means losing trust in people entirely — making it even harder for rescuers to reach them.
Bringing a stray to safety often takes hours of patience and teamwork, and that was exactly the case with Lunch Lady.
This brave girl had survived on her own for most of her life until one day she wandered near the Louisiana SPCA. It took several determined staff members working together before they finally managed to bring her to safety.
Taking The First Step
Once the team brought her inside, they immediately scanned for a microchip, hoping she had a family looking for her.
“She was examined by our veterinarian and treated for minor medical issues. After a few days, she was not claimed, so she was microchipped, vaccinated, and ready for adoption. She got her name due to her being such a lady and catching her around lunchtime,” Jessyca Sulfsted, marketing and communications manager at Louisiana SPCA, told The Dodo.
At first, Lunch Lady felt shy and uncertain, but with time, she warmed up. Soon she transformed into a cuddly, affectionate girl who loved attention.
Everyone could see she longed for a forever home. Before that, though, she needed a little guidance.
Waiting For The Right Match
Since she likely never experienced life in a home, the Louisiana SPCA staff started from the basics. Walking on a leash came first.
“We knew pretty quickly that she was going to need some help,” Sulfsted said.
To make sure visitors understood, the staff placed a sign on her kennel that read: “Hi, I need help learning to walk on a leash.”
This way, whenever someone took her outside, they knew to give her a little practice.
At first, Lunch Lady crouched low to the ground and shuffled forward, almost like she was sneaking into a snack room. But with consistent practice and encouragement, she began improving every day.
“She has shown so much improvement, and we’re confident she will be a pro very soon,” Sulfsted shared.
Lunch Lady would do best with an active family who can help her continue learning while also showering her with love. She enjoys snuggling on the couch just as much as she enjoys a good adventure.
