Illinois Family Was Stunned By Their Foster Dog’s Diagnosis, So They Rushed To Save Him

Jenny Leech has always found her greatest joy in helping senior and special-needs animals. A devoted rescuer, she has spent her life making sure these overlooked pups receive the love and care they deserve.

Over the years, she has seen many heartbreaking cases, but one story in particular touched her deeply—an elderly stray pup left wandering a busy road in the middle of winter.

Though he was eventually taken in by a shelter in Bellwood, Illinois, and given a warm bed, the little dog soon fell into sadness. Day after day, he sat in his kennel as visitors passed him by, never chosen, never offered a loving home.

But everything changed when fate stepped in.

A New Beginning

The 14-year-old Chihuahua, later named Chester, chose to hide away, curling up in the corner of his kennel. Alone, he dreamed of the family he longed for but feared would never come.

Then B.A.A.R.K. Dog Rescue stepped in. They saw his pain and reached out to Leech, arranging a foster placement that would soon turn his life around.

Leech was thrilled to welcome Chester into her home, where a pack of senior dogs—the “Chi Mafia”—were ready to greet their new sibling with warmth and affection.

“He’s got a few lumps and bumps, [long] nails and is a bit off on the seeing and hearing. After a bath, he joined the ‘Chi Mafia’ effortlessly and is walking around with the big guys like he owns the place,” Leech shared in a Facebook post.

Before moving in with Leech, Chester underwent a full medical check-up. Sadly, results revealed a serious heart murmur and a mouth full of decayed teeth. Despite the diagnosis, Chester embraced his new life with joy and gratitude.

“[He’s] the cutest little old man with the stinkiest breath ever,” Leech wrote on Facebook.

One Day At A Time

Chester soon received an extensive dental procedure and began treatment for his heart condition, which greatly improved his quality of life. Just as adoption offers began to roll in, however, Chester suddenly became ill.

Tests revealed a kidney infection, leaving him weak and in need of urgent care. Thankfully, he stabilized under veterinary treatment, but the incident made Leech realize a difficult truth—Chester would be safest remaining in her care.

While she would have loved to see him placed with a forever family, Leech knew that with her experience caring for senior dogs, she could give him the stability and safety he needed most.

“Tonight, he showed us he’s happy to be here by hanging with the crew, begging in the kitchen and eating a good dinner… It’s not the happily-ever-after we pictured for him, but we are honored to be his forever family,” she wrote on Facebook.

Final Word

Though she hadn’t planned on making Chester a “foster fail,” Leech now cherishes every day with her resilient little pup. She keeps up with his treatments, making sure he is as comfortable, happy, and loved as possible.

From being homeless and heartbroken to becoming part of a large, loving family, Chester’s life has taken a beautiful turn. And he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Here’s to the best part of forever for little Chester…” Leech concluded.
