A friend once told me that dogs are the kindest and most loyal animals we’ll ever know. I instantly believed it, and I agreed without hesitation.
Still, even with that in mind, I continue to be amazed whenever I see those acts of kindness firsthand and witness just how deeply they care for other creatures.
This story is a perfect example, a sweet dog who discovered an animal in the forest and decided to bring it to his mom for help.
What Did He Bring?
Winston’s journey began on an ordinary day when his soon-to-be mom was visited by a friend who brought her dog along.
The pup, full of energy, loved roaming around the yard and exploring nearby spots. Since the home was close to a wooded area in California, the curious dog soon stumbled upon something unusual.
It was a tiny animal. Believing it needed help, the dog carried it gently back to his mom.
To her surprise, the little creature turned out to be a baby squirrel, Winston. He was clearly very young, and his new mom wasn’t sure what to do at first.
She decided to make him as comfortable as possible, setting him up in her home and checking on him often to ensure he was still breathing.
It soon became clear that Winston had an injured leg and a swollen face, which made his situation even more concerning.
Unfortunately, the local wildlife rehabilitation center wasn’t able to take in any new animals, leaving her to find another solution.
Turning to the internet for guidance, she learned there was a good chance Winston had been separated from his mother while she was in the process of moving her litter, and the dog had simply come across him at the wrong time.
Driven by a strong instinct to help, the dog truly believed he was doing the right thing by bringing Winston home.
Winston’s New Life
Soon after, Winston’s new mom managed to track down the right formula to feed him. He eagerly accepted it, and with each feeding, he grew stronger and more alert.
She tried locating his original burrow, but it proved nearly impossible. In the meantime, Winston remained with her, slowly growing up in his new environment.
As he got older, she began letting him play in the yard, giving him safe opportunities to explore outside.
Each day, he discovered new corners of the property, though she always kept a close eye on him to protect him from possible traps in the area.
Over time, Winston showed a particular interest in rabbits. Wanting him to have a companion, his mom adopted a rabbit named Artemis, and the two became fast friends.
They loved spending time together, and Winston also had plenty of toys to keep him entertained.
Though his mom never imagined she’d one day be caring for a squirrel, she now can’t picture life without him.
Winston has brought unexpected joy into her days, and she looks forward to the many more years they’ll share.
It’s remarkable how one dog’s simple act of kindness, bringing home a helpless little squirrel, led to such a lasting bond and a beautiful story of love.
