Every day, countless new cases of abandonment and neglect remind us how many helpless dogs are left to suffer. Streets all over the country are filled with vulnerable pups trying to survive on their own.
But even though cruelty exists, there are always compassionate people willing to step in and make a difference.
One of those people is Joey Tuccio, a seasoned rescuer from Los Angeles, California. Joey has helped so many dogs over the years that he has lost count. And once again, his kindness shone through when he came across a sick mama dog and her starving little ones.
Healing With Kind People
Joey was devastated when he learned that this dog had been fending for herself on the streets of Los Angeles for two long years. Her frail appearance told the story of the hardships she had endured.
This Pittie was in heartbreaking condition, and to make things worse, Joey and his fellow rescuers soon realized she had recently given birth. Her puppies were desperately hungry because she couldn’t nurse them—her nipples were infected, leaving the poor babies without food.
There was no time to waste. Joey and the rescuers from Starts With One Today rushed her to a vet clinic, determined to save both her and her puppies.
Thankfully, the doctors acted quickly and provided treatment. Soon, she began to feel a little better, though the sadness in her eyes still lingered.
The dog, later named Lena, was finally released from the hospital, and Joey knew she had begun her journey to a brighter future.
She spent her days surrounded by her puppies, receiving love from rescuers, and enjoying the simple comfort of safety and warmth.
Seeing her transformation filled Joey with joy. It wasn’t the first time he had witnessed such a miracle, but every single one touched his heart deeply.
She Needs A Second Chance
For over a decade, Joey has dedicated his life to rescuing dogs. To date, he has saved nearly 200 lives, and Lena happened to be his milestone 200th rescue.
Despite all he had seen, this rescue felt just as special as the very first. His happiness grew when he later learned that all of Lena’s puppies had found loving adoptive families.
Now, the only missing piece was finding a forever home for their brave mama. Joey was especially motivated to make sure Lena’s story had a complete, happy ending.
“Considering what she went through, she still loves people so much. She’s smart, she’s adorable. The ideal home for Lena would be a home with somebody that can be a little patient with her, which she’ll return with love and snuggles,” Joey shared in his interview with The Dodo.
Until her perfect family comes along, Lena will remain safe in the care of her rescuers, soaking up all the love she missed during her years on the street.
Thanks to Joey and the incredible people who stepped up for her, this once-forgotten Pittie finally has the chance to experience the life she truly deserves.
