When you walk past a dog in a shelter, it’s impossible to know the history behind those sad eyes.
But the story of Rhoudy, a three-year-old Terrier mix who was recently surrendered, was one that truly shocked everyone.
At first glance, the team at Greenville Humane Society, South Carolina thought Rhoudy was just another shelter pup. But then they uncovered a small note left by his former family.
On a tiny piece of paper was a child’s handwritten message with a simple drawing of Rhoudy. That innocent letter brought the staff to tears, and here’s why.
“We Know How Hard It Was To Say Goodbye”

While Rhoudy’s background remained unclear, the note tucked in with his belongings was one of the hardest things his caregivers had ever read.
It was obvious that Rhoudy’s family had made the painful decision to surrender him, but his siblings couldn’t hold back their grief. The note read:
“We love you Rhoudy. I will miss you, Rhoudy. But you’re going home! And I hope your people love you as much as I do,”.

Once Rhoudy arrived at the shelter, the volunteers tried to piece together more of his story, but there was no way to track down his family.
All the team could do was post a reply on social media, hoping that his young siblings might see it someday.
“We know how hard it was to say goodbye. But you were so brave and so strong. Sometimes hard decisions have to be made, but he knows how much you love him,” GHS wrote in a Facebook post.
The message quickly spread online, touching hearts across the country. The shelter also wanted to reassure people that Rhoudy was in good hands.
“He’s doing so good. He’s gone for lots of walks and has all of the toys you brought him in his bed. He’s being given so much love. Yes, he misses you. But he will always love you. Don’t you ever forget that, OK,” the South Carolina rescue added.
Rhoudy Waiting For His New Family

Though his life began with some tough moments, Rhoudy is now safe, thanks to the team that took him in.
He’s no longer just a surrendered dog spending his days in a kennel. Instead, he gets to show his playful side every day to the people caring for him. Still, it’s clear he longs for a family to call his own.
Rhoudy is full of energy and enjoys being around other pups. This lively boy adores being in the spotlight and soaking up attention from everyone he meets.

“I’m a bit of a rough and tumble kind of guy and I love to play and rough house with other dogs… I’m looking for a family who will give me lots of love and attention, and who will keep me active and engaged,” the rescue wrote on their website.
When the right time comes, Rhoudy hopes to find a family of his own, one that will love him for exactly who he is. One thing’s certain, though: he’s an adventurous, lovable pup and definitely a keeper.
