This 10-year-old Chihuahua mix somehow ended up stranded on top of a shopping cart in the middle of a dangerous canal, utterly exhausted and clinging to life.
Frightened and with no escape in sight, she held tightly to the cart, hoping that help might come.
Thankfully, both the Phoenix Fire Department and the Arizona Humane Society’s Field Team responded to the call right away.
How Did She Get There
A passerby noticed what looked like a strange “object” floating in the canal. When they looked closer, they saw it was breathing, and realized it was no object at all.
It was a dog, inexplicably stuck on a shopping cart in the water, with no one around to assist her.
The senior pup, later identified as Dorothea, caught the passerby’s attention immediately.
They contacted authorities and left the job to the professionals. Before long, the Arizona Humane Society and Phoenix Fire Department arrived at the scene.
AHS medical technician Hunter Stribling worked alongside the fire crew to free Dorothea as quickly as possible.
With no idea how long she’d been there, everyone knew speed was critical.
The rescue was a success. Dorothea’s paws finally touched solid ground, much to the relief of Stribling and his fellow rescuers.
“Miracles do happen! We are beyond grateful for the quick actions of our incredible Field Team and the Phoenix Fire Department who worked together to give this sweet pup a second chance at life.” the Arizona Humane Society shared in an Instagram post.
Her dramatic rescue quickly made headlines nationwide, highlighting the incredible efforts of AHS to help animals in need.
Adorable Twist
Dorothea was promptly taken to the hospital for a thorough evaluation.
Aside from dehydration, ticks, and the smell of canal water, she had a few fractured teeth but was otherwise in good health.
It didn’t take long for her to settle in at the AHS facility, enjoying a safe, warm environment. Despite her age, she impressed everyone with her sweet temperament and spirited personality.
Once she began her treatment, Dorothea’s affectionate side shone through.
“Throughout her month of treatment at the shelter (including a spa day with AHS’ groomer) Dorothea was found to be a sweet, loving girl who enjoyed cuddles and attention from humans,” AHS wrote on their website.
Not long after, more good news arrived, an adopter had come forward to give Dorothea a forever home.
Given her gentle, lovable nature and the companionship she offered, the AHS team was thrilled to see her matched with a caring family.
From now on, Dorothea will enjoy strolling through the grass, going for daily walks, and living her golden years surrounded by love.
Her new life will be filled with care and affection, far away from the danger she once faced in that canal.
