Illinois Senior Shelter Dog Overlooked For Over A Year Finally Finds His Forever Family

Brutus faced his first heartbreak when his owner abandoned him and moved to Tennessee.

He was taken to the Humane Society of Central Illinois, a shelter located in Normal, Illinois.

Brutus kept hoping his owner would come back for him, but as time passed, he had to accept that they were not returning.

The shelter team gave him affection and tried to ease his sadness and worry.

Although Brutus enjoyed their company, he longed for a home of his own.

He dreamed of a family that would love him without ever giving up.

Overlooked And Sad

Day after day, Brutus stayed in his kennel hoping someone would notice him and take him home.

Sadly, he realized over time that people kept walking past without stopping, which made him feel sad.

To help show how he felt, the shelter shared heartwrenching footage of Brutus as he waited in his kennel.

The video showed him trying to make eye contact with passersby, but sadly they ignored him and didn’t give him affection.

Brutus felt rejected and hurt. He spent more than a year at the Illinois shelter and wondered if anyone would ever choose him to be part of their family permanently.

Then, when he least expected it, his luck changed.

He won the heart of Isabelle Maria de Dianous, a former EMT and clinical pharmacy technician who recently changed careers to veterinary medicine.

Working as a veterinary assistant strengthened her choice to adopt a dog.

Dianous searched for over two months to find a dog to adopt. She didn’t want a puppy because she knew puppies were adopted more quickly.

The Dog Finds His True Companion

She wanted an older shelter dog who had been overlooked. When she met Brutus, she knew her search was done.

At that time, Brutus was the longest-staying dog at the Humane Society of Central Illinois.

Dianous adopted him and brought him home.

When people heard Brutus had been in the shelter for more than a year, they asked Dianous why he waited so long and if something was wrong with him.

Brutus’ new mom felt sad because people thought he was flawed. She knew he had a huge heart and deserved unconditional love.

Dianous aimed to make Brutus’ transition to his forever home easy, and he showed her there was nothing to worry about.

From his first night, Brutus was calm. He jumped on the bed, chewed a toy, and soon fell asleep after the lights went out.

The Loving Home He Always Needed

He is a big snuggler. He loves cuddling with Dianous and adores everyone he meets.

Just like that, Brutus traded the lonely corner of his kennel for a cozy bed in the home of his dreams. He became more than a pet: he was officially registered as an emotional support animal.

During one walk, Dianous suddenly felt ill and stopped. When she stood up, she noticed Brutus holding on to her.

Looking at him, she saw Brutus cover her face with kisses and rest his head on her.

He stayed by her side, showing he was there for her. When Dianous felt better, they walked home together.

Brutus found his happy ending, but sadly many senior dogs still wait for someone to notice them and offer a chance at a normal life.

I hope this story encourages people to give senior dogs a forever home because they deserve to be loved and cherished.
