Living with dogs teaches you many lessons, but one of the biggest is to always expect the unexpected.
If you notice unusual behavior in your pup, it could be caused by countless things—some harmless, some serious. That’s why it’s important to pay attention and act quickly to rule out any problems.
Sometimes, the explanation is lighthearted—like when a dog acts funny after realizing they’ve done something wrong and tries to hide it.
But other times, as in this story, the truth is far more surprising than anyone could have guessed.
They Weren’t Expecting This
When Joie-May and her boyfriend, Michael, adopted their new dog, Scottie, from a California shelter, they were overjoyed.
Before the adoption was finalized, the rescue staff told them that Scottie hadn’t been spayed yet and would need to return for the procedure. The couple agreed, signed the papers, and took her home to begin her new life.
After settling in, they reached out to the shelter to arrange the spay appointment. But with the staff overwhelmed, the procedure kept getting delayed. Concerned that Scottie might go into heat, they decided to take her to a veterinarian in California for a precautionary check-up.

Then, out of nowhere, the truth revealed itself. Scottie wasn’t just unspayed—she was pregnant. And before they had time to prepare, she gave birth to three adorable puppies right on their couch.
It was a shock neither Joie-May nor Michael had seen coming.
Adjusting To An Instant Family
Completely unprepared for newborns, the couple quickly gathered everything Scottie and her pups would need to be safe and comfortable.
Sadly, one of the puppies—whom they named Ghost—struggled to survive in his first few days. Despite their best efforts, Ghost passed away shortly afterward, breaking their hearts.
Determined to give the remaining pups the best chance possible, they devoted themselves to caring for them. Pig, one of the surviving puppies, had difficulty gaining weight and became their main focus, while his sister, Gray, thrived from the start.
When Joie-May and Michael informed the shelter about Scottie’s surprise litter, the response was far from supportive—the staff simply told them they “should have known” about her pregnancy.
