Adopting a dog is a big decision that involves more than just a desire for companionship. You need to ask: Is your home a good fit? Can the dog get along with other pets? Do you have time to meet the dog’s physical and emotional needs?
Unfortunately, some adopters jump into the process without fully considering these questions, leading to a painful, and often avoidable, return.
Many dogs are surrendered within days of adoption, as new owners realize they’re not ready or simply lack the time to help the dog adjust.
Returning a dog to a shelter is certainly better than abandonment, but it still leaves emotional wounds — something a young pup named Dixon knows all too well.
Dixon Faced Heartbreak More Than Once
Dixon, just a year old, was overjoyed to meet the people he thought would be his forever family. He was a sweet, well-behaved shelter dog with a loving nature.
So, when his new family arrived at the Humane Society of Broward County in Florida, staff felt optimistic that Dixon had finally found his place. But just two days later, he was brought back.
According to the family, Dixon’s enthusiasm was overwhelming. He liked to leap up to give hugs, and they worried he might accidentally injure someone.
That quick rejection was yet another painful blow for Dixon.
Tragically, this wasn’t Dixon’s first failed adoption. Before arriving at Broward County, he had been taken from another shelter, only to be returned again within 24 hours.
That family’s reasoning was equally disheartening: they said their house was simply too small for a dog of Dixon’s size.
After being surrendered a second time, Dixon curled up in the corner of his small kennel, clearly crushed by the experience. While he still held on to hope, his heartbreak was visible.
The shelter shared a poignant video of Dixon lying by the kennel’s glass wall, his eyes silently pleading for love. The clip quickly gained traction online.
“Now, he watches everyone who passes by with those soulful puppy eyes, then lies down by the glass, hoping for a gentle touch. It’s breaking our hearts,” wrote the Humane Society in the video’s caption.
Then, something wonderful happened. The video captured the attention of another family, one ready to offer Dixon the forever home he’d been waiting for.
The Right Home Found Him
After seeing Dixon’s story, a compassionate Florida family contacted the shelter immediately. Already proud pet parents to two dogs, they felt Dixon would be the perfect addition to their pack.
They didn’t hesitate, driving four hours just to meet him in person. From that moment, everything changed for Dixon.
By the next day, he was off to start his new life in a loving home.
“He’s found the perfect family who sees him for the lovable pup he is! They have the patience, understanding, and unconditional love to help him grow into the best boy,” the Florida shelter shared in an Instagram post.
Today, Dixon is living his best life. His new family ensures he stays active and engaged, spending lots of time with his new dog siblings.
He’s even picked up a new skill: swimming!
“We’re happy to share that he’s settling in beautifully—and even learning how to swim,” HSBC added.
From now on, Dixon’s story is one of love and stability. His days of being returned are over—he’s finally home for good.
