I imagine one of the most difficult parts of being a shelter worker is watching dogs’ faces drop when they realize adoption day didn’t lead to a new home.
Shelters can be hard on dogs. Even when they’re treated kindly and well looked after, it’s never meant to be permanent. Every dog deserves more.
Still, not all pups get that chance quickly. Some stay with rescues much longer than they should.
That reality is painful, but not all stories end in sadness. Franny is a loving pup who spent a long time in a Pennsylvania shelter. She had her hopes set on one day leaving for good.
Like many dogs, she’d think each outing meant a new home, only to be let down. But things were about to turn around for her.
Franny Feels Pure Joy
Franny had already spent four months in a Pennsylvania shelter. Life there wasn’t bad, but her caregivers could tell she longed for more.
She often grew downhearted, especially after outings. Danielle Baughman, a staff member at the shelter, noticed this during their frequent walks. Franny didn’t want to go back inside.
Danielle suspected that Franny thought she was being taken to meet her future family. When that wasn’t the case, the pup became sad.
Once, another volunteer named Lindsay took Franny out and witnessed the same thing. Coming back seemed to break her heart.
Lindsay couldn’t stop thinking about her. Feeling sorry for the sweet dog, she brought her home for a sleepover. Franny was thrilled to be there.
It quickly became clear to Lindsay that she wanted to adopt her. The next day, the two enjoyed their morning before heading back.
Franny assumed she was being returned. She had no idea a surprise was in store.
Lindsay filled out the paperwork, officially making Franny hers. The pup was beyond excited when she realized she was finally going home for good.
A Wholesome Reaction
For Danielle, seeing moments like these is everything. She treasures every time a dog finds the right person.
She often records these sweet encounters, like Franny’s, in hopes of spreading awareness about other shelter dogs in need.
This one in particular gained a lot of attention on TikTok where people shared their thoughts on the entire event.
One person commented: “I wish people would adopt the senior dogs and cats who round up at the shelters after their owners pass away. They not only lose their owner but their home. They are confused, scared and alone not knowing what’s going to happen to them. Thank you for the loving heart you have for animals”
That’s a powerful point. Older dogs are just as capable of love and simply need someone to give them a shot.
Another person said: “I had my girl Lena for two days and I had to bring her back to the shelter so I could also sign her papers. She was so upset when we got there and so relieved when I brought her home. Still is!”
It’s comforting to know Franny’s story isn’t the only one like it. There are more people out there stepping up to help dogs in need.
Lastly, somebody commented: “Oh she was so sad to be brought back. And so happy to leave.”
Clearly, Franny wanted nothing more than a normal life with someone to love. She finally got her chance.
It’s such a relief her story ended on a happy note. Hopefully, more people are inspired to give pups like her a shot.
