Most dogs find comfort in plush toys. It’s something any dog owner would recognize.
This is especially true in shelters, where dogs often have little more than a toy to keep them company in their small kennels.
Shelter life is often chaotic and loud, with endless barking echoing through the halls. It’s not an easy place to spend much time, let alone years.
That was the case for Wally, a longtime resident of the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter (TOHAS) in New York, where he spent more than 1,800 days.
But Wally stood out from the others in a unique and touching way—he found comfort in something completely unexpected.
A Bowl That Means Everything

What surprised Wally’s rescuers most was that instead of a stuffed toy, he carried his food bowl wherever he went. It became his source of comfort — something none of the staff had ever seen before.
Over five years at the shelter, this sweet pup had grown dear to the hearts of the New York staff, who worried more and more about him as time passed.
The stress of shelter life was wearing on him. The barking, confinement, and lack of personal connection added to his anxiety—but that bowl gave him a sense of security.

Staff did everything they could to ease Wally’s stress, but day after day passed with no one showing interest in adopting him.
The image of him clinging to his bowl as his only comfort left the staff heartbroken. And Wally had already been through more than enough disappointment.
Since arriving at the shelter, rescuers had managed to place him in homes twice—but both times, he was returned.
Holding On To Hope

His returns had nothing to do with his behavior. Wally was always cheerful and full of life, a dog with a loving spirit.
But each time he came back, he seemed a little more withdrawn, a little more anxious. The staff could see that the weight of not having a home was taking its toll. He just wanted what every dog wants: a family of his own.
Despite everything, the shelter team works hard to keep Wally’s spirits up. And their efforts often pay off.

Wally is an affectionate pup who loves to run around outside and play with the staff or other dogs. He’s happy to trade his toys for a tasty treat and lights up with joy when he’s out of his kennel.
His rescuers are always overjoyed to see him so full of life outdoors. It’s like he becomes a whole new dog in those moments.
Even with all the setbacks he’s faced, everyone at the shelter remains hopeful. They know Wally has been through so much, and he deserves a loving home more than ever.
