Saving a homeless dog is always an incredibly generous act. When you pause to think about it, you’re giving that animal a completely new life.
Thanks to you, the dog now has a chance to live peacefully and happily, free from worries about shelter or food.
Sometimes this may not seem like a huge moment to us, but to a dog, it changes everything, and that’s what truly matters.
Rachel Hague, a volunteer with experience helping many dogs, had a life-changing moment when one particular pup approached her needing care.
A Nervous Pup Reached Out For Help
Rachel first met the concerned dog while she was helping another injured pup.
She told GeoBeats Animals: “I was on a different case helping with a dog that had been injured and trying to help trap him… and Ellie came running up to my truck.”
It was clear to Rachel that this dog wasn’t shy about seeking human help, and she had a calm and gentle demeanor.
The dog, soon named Ellie, was covered in dirt, infested with fleas, and visibly underweight. Rachel quickly took her to a veterinary clinic in Texas.
On the drive there, Ellie fell asleep, clearly feeling safe and cared for with Rachel.
Ellie Had A Life-Changing Reason For Seeking Help
Once they arrived at the clinic, the vet staff performed a thorough exam and made a surprising discovery.
Ellie was expecting puppies and would soon go into labor. Her urgency made sense now. Fortunately, the vet confirmed that Ellie and her babies were in stable condition.
She said: “My soul puppy had just passed away right before that at 19 years old. So, I had zero dogs at the time. I went from zero dogs to very quickly having Ellie and all of her babies.”
Once cleared to leave the clinic, Ellie and her pups went home with Rachel in Texas. Ellie took her role seriously and was a devoted mother, staying close to her babies at all times.
What stood out most was how much Ellie trusted Rachel. She allowed her to handle the puppies and even cuddle them, always watching carefully, like the attentive mom she was.
They Are All Living Their Best Lives
Rachel often thought about Ellie’s past. It was possible that she had been abandoned due to her pregnancy, or perhaps her previous owner couldn’t care for her anymore.
Regardless, Rachel was grateful to help such a kind and loving dog. As the puppies grew, they reached the age for vaccinations and were soon ready to be adopted.
Nearly all of them found loving forever homes shortly afterward, which made Rachel feel overjoyed.
As for Ellie, Rachel had already made up her mind. She said: “Once we had Ellie around the house, I just knew that she was mine.”
But there was one pup who didn’t leave: Bear. Rachel chose to keep her as well, since she loved spending time with her mom even more than with the other pups.
Bear was clearly happiest by Ellie’s side, and Rachel was happy to keep them together. Now, they’re all safe, loved, and living their best lives.
