Thankfully, dedicated rehabilitation centers across the Sunshine State work tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate, and release these magnificent creatures.
I’ve explored these amazing facilities where visitors can witness conservation in action while learning about Florida’s precious wildlife.
1. SeaWorld Orlando Rescue & Rehabilitation Center
Behind the rollercoasters and shows lies SeaWorld’s impressive 5-acre rescue facility that few tourists realize exists. The dedicated team here has rescued over 40,000 animals since 1965!
Their manatee rehabilitation area features specialized lifting floors, making medical procedures less stressful for these gentle giants.
I’ll never forget watching Owa, their 1,000th rescued manatee, being released back into the wild after months of intensive care.
2. The Florida Aquarium Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center (Tampa)
I stood mesmerized as veterinarians treated a loggerhead with fishing line wrapped around its flipper. This 20-acre Conservation Campus houses four specialized turtle pools, including a deep-dive foraging area where recovering patients strengthen muscles before release.
Last winter, they nursed 56 cold-stunned turtles back to health! Visitors can view treatments through special observation windows while staff explain the rehabilitation process and conservation efforts.
3. Clearwater Marine Aquarium (Clearwater)
Famous as the home of Winter, the dolphin with a prosthetic tail, this nonprofit has evolved into a premier rehabilitation center since 1972. Their new state-of-the-art Manatee Rehabilitation Center opened in 2024, featuring five pools designed specifically for these endangered mammals.
The facility also specializes in treating fibropapilloma tumors in sea turtles—a devastating disease affecting marine turtle populations worldwide. Educational presentations throughout the day explain their rescue-rehab-release mission.
4. Gulfarium C.A.R.E. Center (Panama City Beach)
“Release day is better than Christmas,” my guide whispered as we watched staff prepare three Kemp’s ridley turtles for their return to the Gulf. This specialized facility focuses exclusively on sea turtle rehabilitation, treating everything from boat strike injuries to fishing hook entanglements.

5. Mote Marine Laboratory Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Hospital (Sarasota)

The most heartwarming section? Their hatchling hospital, where tiny turtles no bigger than your palm receive care before being released.
During my visit, staff were treating a 300-pound loggerhead whose shell had been fractured by a boat propeller.
6. Loggerhead Marinelife Center (Juno Beach)
Situated steps from one of Florida’s most important sea turtle nesting beaches, this center combines cutting-edge rehabilitation with groundbreaking research. Their hospital treats around 100 sea turtles annually, many suffering from plastic ingestion or entanglement.
What makes this place special? The massive picture windows allowing visitors to witness surgeries and treatments in real-time.
My jaw dropped watching a veterinarian delicately remove a fishing hook from a green turtle’s throat while explaining the procedure to fascinated onlookers.
7. Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center (Navarre)
Sweet Pea, the resident non-releasable green turtle, greets visitors from her 15,000-gallon habitat at this volunteer-run gem. Unlike larger facilities, this intimate center focuses primarily on education while providing a permanent home for Sweet Pea, who lost her flipper to a boat strike.
The passionate volunteers here, many retired teachers and marine biologists, share compelling stories about local conservation efforts. With approximately 65,000 annual visitors, this small center makes a massive impact on raising awareness about sea turtle protection.
8. Gulf Specimen Marine Laboratory (Panacea)
Tucked away in Florida’s forgotten coast, this hidden gem started as a collecting station for scientific specimens before evolving into the Panhandle’s premier sea turtle hospital. The no-frills facility lacks the polish of tourist attractions but compensates with authentic, hands-on experiences.
During winter cold snaps, their rescue team mobilizes to save dozens of cold-stunned turtles. I arrived just as staff were treating a loggerhead that had swallowed a fishing hook, a common injury they’ve become experts at addressing.
9. Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge (Crystal River)
This isn’t a traditional rehabilitation center, but rather nature’s own recovery ward for Florida’s beloved manatees. The refuge protects critical warm-water springs where hundreds of these endangered mammals gather during winter months to escape potentially fatal cold waters.
Rangers monitor manatee health, identifying injured animals needing intervention. The visitor center offers exceptional educational programs about manatee conservation.
I kayaked through the springs, watching volunteers document scars and injuries to track individual manatees’ recovery progress.
10. Conservancy of Southwest Florida (Naples)
The von Arx Wildlife Hospital hides behind unassuming doors at this Naples conservation center. Inside reveals a bustling medical facility treating everything from injured pelicans to orphaned otters.
Unlike specialized marine centers, this hospital rehabilitates over 3,300 animals annually, representing more than 100 different species!
The staff performed miracles during my visit, mending a hawk’s broken wing, tube-feeding baby squirrels, and treating a gopher tortoise hit by a car.
