It is hard to believe that a dog like Deja had never felt the warmth of a real family. She had gone so long without knowing what it meant to be deeply loved.
After being transferred from Gulf Coast Humane Society, Deja arrived at Patty Baker Humane Society in Naples, Florida. Right away, she stood out to everyone around her.
Her beauty was striking, but her gentle, affectionate nature made an even bigger impression. The staff felt sure a forever family would notice her quickly.
Then time kept passing. Days became weeks, weeks became months, and before anyone could make sense of it, three full years had gone by.
Deja was still in her kennel, quietly watching other dogs leave with their new families. All she could do was wait patiently for the day someone finally chose her.
Holding On To Hope
The staff could not understand why such a sweet and loving dog kept being overlooked by adopters.
Deja seemed just as confused. Still, she never stopped being her cheerful self, greeting volunteers with love and warmth every single day.
“Despite nearly three years of waiting, she remains full of love and joy, always eager to meet new human friends,” said Patrizia Vila, the events and outreach coordinator at Patty Baker Humane Society Naples, in an interview with The Dodo.
At seven years old, Deja patiently waits, day after day, hoping that someone will finally walk through the shelter doors and choose her.
Whenever loneliness sets in, she curls up on her small bed, resting her head on her paws, wishing for the moment she will finally be taken home.
When she meets new people, Deja can be shy at first, but once she trusts you, her loving personality shines through.
While she has adapted to shelter life, the staff knows that her true, joyful nature only emerges when she’s with people who care for her.
Dreaming Of A Forever Home
Deja doesn’t ask for much. All she wants is a family who will love her and make her feel like she belongs.
“Her dream home would be with a loving family, in a house with a yard, where she could be their TV-watching buddy one moment and their wrestling partner the next,” said Stephanie Lewis, COO of the Florida shelter, to The Dodo.
The friendly pup would do best as the only dog in the home, where she can enjoy all the love and attention she’s missed out on for so long.
Though she has spent years waiting, Deja’s spirit remains bright. The shelter staff continue to hope that the perfect family will soon notice her and give her the life she’s always deserved.
If you’re looking for a loyal companion who will love you endlessly, consider visiting Patty Baker Humane Society and meeting Deja. After all, three years is far too long for such a loving soul to wait for her happily ever after.
Deja, everyone is cheering for you to finally find your forever home!
